Magnitude: 4.2
Distance: Aprox: 1,600 light-years
Constellation: Puppis
Diameter: 12 light-years
Star Count Aprox: 50

M 47 is a bright open star cluster. The cluster’s apparent size is roughly the same as that of the full Moon. The cluster is visible to the naked eye in dark, clear skies and appears as a hazy patch of nebulosity. The cluster is located close to Messier 46, a considerably more distant open cluster. M46 has significantly more stars, but appears much dimmer because it lies at a greater distance from Earth.
