Messier 49 is one of the many members of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies. Messier 49 was the first member of the Virgo Cluster to be discovered and is the brightest galaxy in this group. It is located roughly in the area between Vindemiatrix and Denebola, the third brightest star in the neighbouring constellation Leo.
